This whetstone has two different faces, each one for a different level of sharpening. As a general rule, the higher is the number of the grit, the smaller and finer is the grain present in the whetstones and a thus a sharper ending result. The two faces included in this whetstone are the following:
- Grit 300 (the lower, orange part of the whetstone) has a coarse grain, which is ideal for the initial sharpening of a knife's blade. It is the most recommendable grit for blunt knives.
- Grit 1000 (the upper, grayish part of the whetstone) has smaller grain for achieving a finer sharpening of the cutting edge.
In order to the get the best results from using your whetstone, you have to soak it in water for about 5 to 10 minutes. Then, while sharpening the knife, the whetstone must always stay slightly wet. During the sharpening process, the whetstone can be placed in its black, plastic stand.
